The “Barbie” star announced the cancellation of her sold-out “An Evening With Issa Rae” shows through her Instagram Stories on February 13. She directly addressed her disappointed fans with an explanation for her withdrawal from the venue.
“Unfortunately, due to what I believe to be an infringement on the values of an institution that has faithfully celebrated artists of all backgrounds through all mediums, I’ve decided to cancel my appearance at this venue,” she stated.
Her message assured ticket holders they would receive refunds and concluded with, “Thank you so much for understanding, and I hope to see you soon.”
The decision follows significant changes at the Kennedy Center, where Trump recently dismantled much of the traditionally nonpartisan board of trustees. The former president installed his supporters in key positions, assuming the role of chairman himself and appointing Richard Grenell as president.
Throughout her career, Rae has established herself as a prominent voice for social justice causes. Her activism spans multiple areas, including racial equality and women’s rights. She has demonstrated strong support for various organizations, including Black Lives Matter, the ACLU, and BLD PWR. Through her television series “Insecure,” she has consistently promoted Black-owned businesses and addressed social justice themes.
The actress’s departure from the Kennedy Center reflects her ongoing commitment to these values and her willingness to take decisive action when she perceives those values are being compromised.
