A recent survey conducted by the Associated Press and the University of Chicago’s nonpartisan National Opinion Research Center has revealed that the majority of Americans, particularly Republicans, do not want to hear political opinions from athletes and celebrities.

The poll, published on Thursday, found that just under 40 percent of Democrat respondents approved of celebrities sharing their views on politics. However, this sentiment was not shared by Republicans and independents, with only 11 percent of Republicans and 12 percent of independents expressing approval for celebrities voicing their political opinions.

The responses regarding professional athletes were similar – 39 percent of Democrats approved of athletes expressing their political views, while a mere 16 percent of Republicans and 15 percent of independents agreed.

During the 2024 election cycle, many prominent voices on the right reiterated their stance that celebrity endorsements do not hold sway over them, as they would not be directly impacted by the fiscal policies like the middle and lower classes.

The poll also revealed that Americans are actively trying to reduce their media consumption related to government and politics. A staggering 65 percent of respondents cited reasons such as “information overload, fatigue, or similar reasons” for their desire to cut back on political news intake, while 50 percent cited overseas conflicts as a contributing factor.

Additionally, approximately 40 percent of respondents expressed a desire to reduce their news consumption due to concerns about the economy and climate change.
