Bernie Sanders Defends Kamala Harris’ Shift, Calls It ‘Pragmatic’ Move To Win Votes

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) has spoken out in defense of Vice President Kamala Harris, arguing that her recent moves in the 2024 presidential race aren’t a rejection of progressive ideals but a necessary strategy to win. Sanders made these remarks during an interview on NBC’s Meet the Press, where he explained that Harris is being “pragmatic” while aiming for electoral success.

When asked whether Harris has abandoned her progressive roots, Sanders was clear in his response, stating, “No, I don’t think she’s abandoning her ideals. I think she’s trying to be pragmatic and doing what she thinks is right in order to win the election.” He further elaborated that while they may not see eye to eye on every issue, he still considers Harris a progressive leader.

Sanders has been a strong voice for working-class Americans, and he noted that many feel Congress no longer represents their interests. He distanced himself from Harris on this point, saying, “Her views are not mine,” though he acknowledged her commitment to progressive policies like the child tax credit and affordable housing.

Harris has highlighted her goal of building millions of affordable homes, which Sanders praised as an important step in tackling the nation’s housing crisis. He pointed out that her plan could have a major impact on lowering housing costs for Americans struggling in today’s market.

Critics, however, have taken issue with some of Harris’ policies, such as her proposed price controls on groceries. These proposals, intended to curb what she calls “price gouging,” have raised concerns, especially since grocery stores typically operate on slim profit margins. This stance is reminiscent of policies seen in socialist-leaning countries.

In the midst of her shifting positions, Sanders insists that Harris is still grounded in progressive values, though her focus has shifted as she navigates the road to the White House.
