President Biden has signed new legislation expanding Social Security benefits for certain retirees, marking the first enhancement of these benefits in two decades. The law specifically targets individuals who receive public pensions, including former first responders and law enforcement officers.
The legislation, known as the Social Security Fairness Act, gained approval from both chambers of Congress, with the Senate giving its final endorsement last month. The new law eliminates long-standing provisions that previously reduced Social Security payments for individuals who also collected pension benefits.

“The bill I’m signing today is about a simple proposition: Americans who have worked hard all their lives … should be able to retire with economic security and dignity,” Biden said. “That’s the entire purpose of the Social Security system crafted by Franklin Delano Roosevelt nearly 90 years ago.”
This legislative change reverses modifications made to the retirement program decades ago that were initially implemented to restrict federal benefits for high-earning pension recipients. As time progressed, these limitations began affecting a broader range of public sector employees, including postal workers, who found their retirement benefits subject to similar restrictions.
