Hollywood actress Sigourney Weaver’s performance in Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” at London’s Theatre Royal was interrupted by a dramatic protest from climate activists on Monday.

Two members of Just Stop Oil made their way onto the stage during the performance, where they deployed a confetti cannon and displayed a banner reading “Over 1.5 Degrees is a Global Shipwreck.”

Their demonstration referenced the recent milestone of 2024 marking the first complete year exceeding the critical 1.5-degree global temperature increase threshold – a point beyond which scientists caution could threaten the stability of life on Earth.

The audience expressed their disapproval of the disruption with a chorus of boos, whistles, and calls demanding the removal of the protesters.

Just Stop Oil later identified the participants in their statement. One was Hayley Walsh, 42, who works as a lecturer in Nottingham, central England.

“I am scared for my children, I can’t sleepwalk them into a future of food shortages, life-threatening storms and wars for resources,” she said.

The other protester was identified as Richard Weir, a 60-year-old mechanical engineer.

The production, which premiered on December 19, features the 75-year-old star of “Alien” in the role of the magician Prospero.
