Ivor Caplin, a former Labour Party MP and government minister, found himself in a precarious situation following a sting operation conducted by a group of self-proclaimed “paedophile hunters.” According to reports in the Daily Mail, the 66-year-old was arrested on Saturday after the group claimed he was seeking to meet with an underage boy.

Footage circulating on social media depicted a man bearing a striking resemblance to Caplin being detained during the sting. Sussex Police confirmed the incident, stating, “We are aware of footage circulating on social media showing a man in Brighton being detained on suspicion of engaging in online sexual communications with a child. Officers can confirm that a local 66-year-old man was arrested on Saturday January 11 and currently remains in custody. This is an ongoing and active investigation.”

Caplin, who served as the MP for Hove from 1997 to 2005 and held the position of junior defence minister in Tony Blair’s government from 2003 to 2005, was suspended from the Labour Party last year amid unnamed “serious allegations.” At the time, the former MP denied any wrongdoing.

Beyond his political career, Caplin was actively involved in various left-wing campaign groups in Britain, including serving as the chairman of the Jewish Labour Movement and as a patron of the LGBT+ Labour group.

Ironically, just last week, Caplin appeared on GB News, where he criticized X owner Elon Musk for commenting on the Muslim child rape grooming gang scandal, accusing figures like Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and Safeguarding and Violence Against Women and Girls Minister Jess Phillips of alleged failures. Caplin asserted that it was “not acceptable” for the American entrepreneur to weigh in on the matter.

In the statement from Sussex Police, they reiterated, “This is an ongoing and active investigation.”
