After nearly 13 years on the run, Eduardo Hernandez, a California inmate who escaped from a prison camp, was captured in New York City last month. Hernandez, 42, had been serving a sentence for armed carjacking when he escaped from the Delta Conservation Camp on November 15, 2011.
The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation reported that Hernandez was arrested on May 20 and will be returned to California to serve the remainder of his sentence. Additional charges related to his escape are also possible.
Hernandez’s escape from the minimum-security Delta Conservation Camp in Suisun City occurred before dawn. He and another inmate, Jose Padilla, who remains at large, were last seen wearing orange blaze-colored jeans and shirts labeled “CDCR prisoner.”
The Delta Conservation Camp, managed by the corrections department and the state’s Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, deploys incarcerated fire crews for fire suppression and conservation efforts. Officials noted that since 1977, the majority of escapees from these facilities have been recaptured.
Hernandez began his 13-year sentence on August 4, 2005, and had served six years before escaping. His recapture means his case will now be reviewed by the Solano County District Attorney’s Office for potential charges related to his escape.
