At the Munich Security Conference on Friday, newly sworn-in Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard highlighted President Donald Trump’s commitment to promoting peace and unity. She stated that in this critical time of complex threats, robust intelligence and security collaborations are crucial for safeguarding nations’ freedom, security, and the pursuit of peace.
Gabbard, a former congresswoman from Hawaii and lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve, emphasized that Trump had promised his proudest legacy would be as a peacemaker and unifier. She noted that the foundations of this peaceful legacy are already visible less than a month into his second term.
According to Gabbard, the president is particularly focused on ending the “killing and brutality” in the Russia-Ukraine conflict and “preventing nuclear war.” She quoted:

> He continues to be focused on countering radical Islamist terrorism, the proliferation of drugs like fentanyl, and targeting those profiting from human trafficking. He designated cartels as foreign terrorist organizations and invoked the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 to eliminate foreign gangs and criminal networks from our country. He is overhauling the trade system to recognize the principles of fair play and reciprocity, signaling America will insist on a level economic playing field.
Gabbard clarified that while Trump’s policies prioritize “America First,” this should not be misconstrued as “America alone.” A strong America is better positioned to lead, collaborate with, and support allies and partners in pursuit of shared interests like peace, security, and prosperity.
The former 2020 Democratic presidential candidate, who joined the Republican Party in October 2024, underscored the necessity of a “coordinated global response” to defeat terrorism and address challenges posed by Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea.

Acknowledging her newcomer status as DNI, Gabbard highlighted her over two decades of experience with national security issues through military service and Congress. She pledged to strengthen relationships, facilitate critical information exchange to counter threats and advance mutual interests, and refocus the DNI’s office on its original mission of keeping Americans safe and providing accurate, timely intelligence.
Gabbard’s speech followed Vice President JD Vance’s remarks expressing concern about Europe’s “threat from within,” despite the focus on Russian and Chinese subversion. Vance questioned whether European nations were truly upholding democratic values, citing instances of canceled elections and threats against officials.
Meanwhile, Trump reported productive phone conversations with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday, describing them as steps towards peace between the two nations. Trump shared that both leaders want to make peace and end the ongoing war’s casualties.
