Georgia DA Vows Prison Time For Trump If Convicted

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis told CNN Thursday that former President Donald Trump could serve prison time if convicted on racketeering charges to overturn the 2020 election in Georgia.

“I think that everyone in society is the same, and I don’t know why that’s such a difficult concept for people,” Willis told CNN. “You can look at the charges, and based on those charges, we’ll be recommending appropriate sentences. No one gets a special break because of their status.” Trump could potentially spend the rest of his life in prison if convicted.

Willis made her remarks when questioned by reporters at a “Shaq-a-Thon” charity event in Atlanta. She was there with former NBA star Shaquille O’Neal to distribute toys to children. The Georgia D.A. said the case against Trump and other defendants could take “a while” to conclude. “The judicial process is a long process,” she explained.

The Fulton County prosecutor has hinted at prison time for Trump in the past. In a November email to defense attorneys she wrote that they should expect “a long road ahead.” She warned their legal careers will continue “long after these folks are in jail,” referring to the former president and other defendants in the 2020 election case.

Willis also made comments sympathizing with the plaintiffs in a recent lawsuit against former New York City mayor and Trump ally Rudy Guiliani. The civil case concluded Wednesday with a financially crippling award of $148 million to two election workers who sued Guiliani for defamation. He filed for bankruptcy protection the following day.

The charges Trump faces in Georgia carry a maximum penalty of more than 70 years behind bars. Several experts told Newsweek that incarcerating the former president would pose a massive security challenge for prison officials. Former Federal Bureau of Prisons officer Robert Rogers said fellow inmates might try to kill Trump “just to make a name for themselves.”

Fulton County indicted the former president earlier this year. His political rivals in the Democrat Party took great pleasure in circulating and commenting on the mugshot taken of Trump in Fulton County jail.
