Mel Gibson is set to produce a limited TV series that brings to light the heroic defense of Malta during the historic siege against the Ottoman Empire. This project stands in contrast to many Hollywood portrayals that often depict Christians unfavorably.
“I’m also working on a TV limited series about the Siege of Malta, which is an incredible story,” Gibson revealed, emphasizing the significance of filming at the actual historical sites. The siege took place from May to September in 1565, where 700 knights from the Knights Hospitaller stood firm against a massive force of 40,000 Turkish troops.
Despite the overwhelming odds, the knights emerged victorious, marking a pivotal moment in the struggle between Christian Europe and the Ottoman Empire. According to historical accounts, approximately 3,000 defenders were killed, while the Ottomans lost around 20,000 men during this fierce confrontation.
The victory at Malta represented a significant setback for the Ottomans and inspired hope across Christian Europe, delaying their advances until the later Siege of Vienna in 1683. Gibson’s series aims to provide a fresh perspective on this important chapter in history.
In addition to the Malta series, Gibson is also focused on completing a sequel to his previous film “The Passion of the Christ.” Titled “The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection,” this long-awaited project is set to begin filming in the spring, exploring the events surrounding Jesus’ resurrection in depth.
