Federal agencies released a joint statement Monday addressing concerns about drone sightings over New Jersey, affirming that these aerial vehicles do not present any threat to national security.

The collaboration between DHS, FAA, FBI, and DOD highlighted that among the million-plus drones officially registered with the FAA, thousands operate legally each day across American skies for various purposes, including commercial, recreational, and law enforcement activities.

Recent weeks have seen the FBI processing over 5,000 drone sighting reports, generating approximately 100 leads. Federal authorities are working alongside state and local officials to investigate these incidents, deploying advanced detection equipment and trained observers to the area.

The agencies explained that many reported sightings actually encompass legitimate drone operations, alongside conventional aircraft and even celestial bodies mistaken for drones. While acknowledging public concern, they emphasized that these aerial activities pose no risk to public safety or national security.

Addressing specific concerns about drones near military installations in New Jersey and surrounding areas, the statement noted that such occurrences aren’t unprecedented. It explained, “DoD takes unauthorized access over its airspace seriously and coordinates closely with federal, state, and local law enforcement authorities, as appropriate. Local commanders are actively engaged to ensure there are appropriate detection and mitigation measures in place.”

Earlier statements from the Pentagon dismissed speculation about both foreign and domestic military control of the mysterious drones seen in the northeast United States. A report observed, “The Pentagon has stated that the mystery drones flying over parts of New Jersey and the northeast U.S. in recent weeks are not controlled by the U.S. military but also not believed to be controlled by foreign entities.” The report added, “Despite these claims, the Pentagon can’t say just who actually is in control of the drones causing havoc and concern along the Atlantic coast.”

The White House has consistently maintained its position that these drone activities do not constitute a national security threat.
