Left-wing groups are pulling out all the stops to enshrine abortion rights in Florida’s constitution, and they’re not shy about using significant funds to do it. A coalition of progressive organizations and labor unions has banded together, investing millions into a campaign to get a pro-abortion amendment on the 2024 ballot.
The campaign, dubbed “Floridians Protecting Freedom,” is painting itself as a grassroots effort. But peek behind the curtain, and you’ll find some major players financially supporting the operation. We’re talking about groups like the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and Planned Parenthood, along with unions like the Florida Education Association and SEIU Florida.
These organizations aren’t exactly strapped for cash. The ACLU, for instance, raised $397 million in 2022. Meanwhile, Planned Parenthood’s political arms have over $70 million in assets. It’s safe to say they’ve got some serious financial support backing this initiative.
But here’s where it gets interesting. Some of these groups have connections to billionaire George Soros. The Open Society Foundations, Soros’s philanthropic outfit, has been known to provide funding to both the ACLU and Planned Parenthood. Talk about a small world, right?

The campaign’s endgame? To amend Florida’s constitution and block any restrictions on abortion before viability. They’ve already gathered over a million signatures, putting them well on track to get the measure on the ballot.
But not everyone’s thrilled about this push. Governor Ron DeSantis has come out strongly against it, calling the proposed amendment “radical” and warning it could lead to late-term abortions. He’s vowed to fight vigorously against it.
On the flip side, the campaign’s supporters argue they’re just trying to protect Floridians’ freedoms. They claim the amendment would restore rights that existed before the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.
As the battle lines are drawn, it’s clear this is shaping up to be one heated debate. With millions of dollars flowing in and high-profile backers on both sides, Florida’s 2024 ballot is set to be a major flashpoint in the ongoing abortion rights saga. Buckle up, folks – this one’s gonna be a wild ride.
