Hunter Biden’s license to practice law in Washington, D.C., has been suspended following his recent conviction in a federal gun trial. The D.C. Court of Appeals issued an order on Tuesday suspending Biden’s law license immediately, pending further resolution of the matter.
The suspension follows a guilty verdict by a Delaware jury earlier this month, where Biden was found guilty of lying on a federal screening form about his drug use, lying to a gun dealer, and unlawfully possessing a firearm. The DC Bar’s Office of Disciplinary Counsel filed a notice seeking the suspension of Biden’s law license after the June 11 conviction, according to the New York Post.
In its order, the DC Court of Appeals cited the serious nature of Biden’s crimes, noting that offenses involving “false swearing, misrepresentation, [or] fraud” are grounds for suspension under the bar association’s rules. The court also called on the DC Bar’s Board on Professional Responsibility to determine if the offense involves moral turpitude.
Despite the publication of the contents of Hunter Biden’s laptop over three years ago, which exposed numerous alleged financial, sex, and drug-related crimes, Biden was still listed as a member in good standing with the bar association until this recent action.
Hunter Biden, a Yale Law School graduate admitted to the DC bar in 2007, has not actively practiced law in recent years. He held an “of counsel” position at Boies Schiller Flexner LLP during Joe Biden’s vice presidency. His law license in Connecticut is also under suspension for failure to pay a reinstatement fee.
Biden faces up to 25 years in prison for his federal gun violations, although as a first-time, nonviolent offender, he is expected to receive a shorter sentence. Sentencing is expected in the fall. Additionally, Biden faces a federal tax evasion trial in California in September, where he is accused of evading $1.4 million in taxes between 2016 and 2019.
