An illegal alien was arrested and charged with murder on Sunday after the body of a woman was found on the side of the road in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
The suspect, 28-year-old Mexican illegal alien Brandon Ortiz-Vite, was taken into custody on Sunday and charged with homicide/open murder, felony firearm possession, carjacking, operating a vehicle while intoxicated and driving on a suspended or revoked license. He is expected to be arraigned later this week.
Reporting from local news outlet The Midwesterner revealed that Michigan State Police were called to Route 131 in downtown Grand Rapids shortly after 11:30 p.m. on Friday night in response to reports of a deceased woman on the side of the road. After arriving at the scene, police officers determined that the woman, who has since been identified as Ruby Garcia, had suffered from a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim was identified by her sister, Mavi, who wrote a Facebook post naming Ortiz-Vite as the suspect. Mavi Garcia warned in the post that her sister’s alleged murderer may be trying to flee the country to his place of origin — the Durango and Puebla regions of Mexico. She later confirmed that Ortiz-Vite was actually in police custody.
Mavi Garcia also spoke with The Midwesterner, noting that she did not want to discuss the relationship between her sister and the alleged murderer, though she did confirm that he was in the U.S. illegally. She described her sister Ruby as “a great daughter, sister, aunt and friend.”
“She will be remembered as being full of life and laughter, those who were around her would know she was silly and made everyone laugh,” she told the outlet.
In a Facebook post, Mavi Garcia explained that the family had set up a GoFundMe to pay for Ruby’s funeral service — which has raised more than $15,500 from 287 donations as of Tuesday evening.
“As you all know, our precious sister was taken from us on the night of 3/22/24,” she wrote. “Due to the sudden loss, we have unexpected finances so we would like to open this account and ask for any donations to help give her the services she deserves. Anything helps, and we appreciate the help. Thank you to everyone that has supported us through these tough times, we appreciate all the love. Forever Ruby’s World.”
Police have since confirmed that Ruby was murdered during a carjacking, noting that her vehicle was later found in a residential area with bullet holes and suspected blood stains inside. They have also confirmed that Ortiz-Vite was dating Ruby prior to her death — reporting that the illegal alien had turned himself in to police with blood on his clothes, where he admitted to shooting his girlfriend multiple times in her car and leaving her on the side of the road. Texts recovered from Ruby’s phone show that the couple had agreed to meet the night she was killed, just an hour before her death.
“This is another case of a domestic violence homicide that we’ve seen, quite frankly, far too often over the last few years,” said Kent County Prosecutor Christopher Becker.
