Israel shuts embassy over Ireland’s genocide accusations

Israel has decided to close its embassy in Ireland following the country’s support of South Africa’s genocide accusation at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), as announced by Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar.

The lawsuit, filed by South Africa against Israel at the ICJ, alleges genocide in Israel’s response to Hamas’s October 7 attack. The case has been criticized for containing antisemitic elements, including denying Jews the right to self-defense and misappropriating religious texts to portray Jews negatively, while overlooking Hamas’s own genocidal ideology.

Despite limited support for South Africa’s case, even from a court typically unfavorable to Israel, Ireland chose to back the genocide claim. Critics noted Ireland’s attempt to broaden the definition of genocide in its support.

“The antisemitic actions and rhetoric that Ireland is taking against Israel are based on delegitimization and demonization of the Jewish state and on double standards,” says Sa’ar in a statement. “Ireland has crossed all red lines in its relationship with Israel. Israel will invest its resources in promoting bilateral relations with the countries of the world according to priorities that are also derived from the attitude of the various countries towards it.”

Simultaneously, Sa’ar revealed plans to establish an embassy in Moldova within the next year, with preparations already underway for location selection and ambassador appointment.

Israel had previously withdrawn its ambassador from Ireland in May after the country joined Spain and Norway in recognizing Palestine as a state, despite its non-existence as a physical entity – a move seen as effectively rewarding Hamas’s October 7 attack.

The Irish sovereignty movement has historically sympathized with the Palestinian cause, with both movements having terrorist elements. However, while the Irish Republican Army eventually abandoned violence, Hamas and Palestinian forces continue their terrorist activities and reject Israel’s right to exist.
