A Maryland mayor has sparked controversy by announcing plans to allocate taxpayer money to protect illegal immigrants from deportation under President-elect Donald Trump’s administration.
During a Thursday press conference at Frederick’s city hall, Mayor Michael O’Connor outlined his progressive agenda, which includes establishing a legal defense fund for undocumented residents in the city of 78,000, located northwest of Baltimore.

O’Connor emphasized his commitment to providing legal resources, stating the fund would ensure undocumented residents receive necessary legal support to remain in their chosen community.
Local reaction has been largely negative, according to WBFF’s interviews with Frederick residents. Rachel Pett expressed preference for tax dollars to benefit American citizens, while Ryan Head highlighted the disparity in legal support between citizens and illegal immigrants.
David Williams, a taxpayer advocate, argued that the city lacks sufficient resources for such a fund, suggesting the money would be better spent on essential community needs and infrastructure.
Rita Darko expressed mixed feelings, acknowledging immigrants’ community contributions while questioning the use of public funds for their legal expenses.
State Delegate Jesse Pippy, the local Republican Party chair, criticized O’Connor’s speech as “egregious” and “highly inappropriate,” according to the Frederick News-Post.
O’Connor defended his proposal, telling WBFF: “This could support any resident in our community, and while we will never get everyone to agree on everything, working to support residents who may be fearful through trusted community partners is worth advocating for.”
The proposal requires city council approval, though none of the five council members have commented on the matter.

O’Connor’s announcement included a pledge to prevent local law enforcement from cooperating with federal immigration authorities in deportation efforts. He also expressed strong support for abortion rights and LGBTQ+ inclusivity.
These positions notably conflict with Catholic teachings, despite O’Connor’s documented connections to the faith, including his Catholic education background and involvement with Saint Katharine Drexel Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.
The Catholic church maintains strict positions against abortion and considers homosexual acts “intrinsically disordered.”
