During a recent episode of “With Love, Meghan” on Netflix, Meghan Markle graciously corrected Mindy Kaling’s repeated use of her maiden name, explaining her preference for her family name, Sussex.

The interaction occurred when Kaling mentioned Markle’s dining habits at Jack in the Box, prompting the former actress to point out the significance of her current surname. “It’s so funny, too, that you keep saying Meghan Markle. You know I’m Sussex now,” she noted during their conversation.

The Duchess elaborated on the emotional weight behind the name change. “You have kids and you go, ‘No, I share my name with my children,'” Markle said. “It just means so much to go, ‘This is our family name, our little family name.'”

In a concurrent interview with People magazine, Markle expanded on these sentiments. “I love that that is something that Archie, Lili, H and I all have together,” she shared. “It means a lot to me.” She also touched on her children’s growing curiosity about their parents’ relationship, noting that questions about how she and Harry met would likely increase as they grow older.

The Sussex title became theirs following their May 2018 wedding, with their children’s titles recently evolving to Prince Archie of Sussex and Princess Lilibet of Sussex after Queen Elizabeth’s passing and King Charles III’s succession. Page Six confirmed Sussex as their official family surname in February 2024.

While discussing the Netflix series, Markle mentioned that although her children don’t appear on screen, they are frequently referenced. The show features brief appearances by Prince Harry and Markle’s mother, Doria Ragland, alongside guests like makeup artist Daniel Martin, socialite Delfina Figueras, and Kaling.

During their segment, Kaling and Markle discovered common ground in their experiences as “latchkey kids” and discussed parenting. Markle expressed joy in her role as a mother, describing it as “a present” mom to her two children “a real delight.”

The series made its debut on Netflix Tuesday, offering viewers intimate insights into Markle’s life and relationships.
