U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) executed a substantial methamphetamine seizure in Roma, Texas, which Mexican authorities subsequently attempted to claim partial credit for.
The incident took place on March 5 at the Roma International Bridge, where CBP officers discovered suspicious cargo in a truck transporting mineral water. According to CBP’s official statement, the inspection process involved both canine units and specialized scanning equipment, leading to the discovery of illicit substances concealed within more than 1,600 bottles.
Port Director Andres Guerra stated, “this huge methamphetamine seizure illustrates the phenomenal work our CBP officers do every day to keep our borders secure.”

Notably, CBP’s official documentation of the incident made no reference to any Mexican involvement or cooperation.
Despite this, Mexico’s National Guard released their own statement claiming collaborative efforts between multiple Mexican agencies – including their Army, Navy, Attorney General’s Office, National Guard, and Public Security Secretariat – and CBP in both the drug seizure and driver arrest. The Mexican authorities’ statement included identical drug quantity figures as those reported by CBP, accompanied by photographs of their personnel positioned alongside the seized cargo.

The conflicting narratives emerged just after a Breitbart News Foundation investigation revealed the ineffectiveness of Mexico’s recently implemented National Guard checkpoints at northbound entry points. These checkpoints, while failing to produce significant contraband seizures, have significantly increased border crossing times for travelers, with delays doubling or tripling.
The checkpoint initiative began in February, following U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat of imposing tariffs on Mexico unless they enhanced their efforts to combat drug and human trafficking. In response, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum deployed 10,000 National Guard members to the northern border region. However, while CBP continues to report major drug interceptions on the U.S. side, Mexican authorities have only reported one seizure – the same one actually conducted by U.S. officials.
