MSNBC Hosts: Democrat Identity Politics Failing Voters

The MSNBC program “Morning Joe” hosts took aim at the Democratic Party’s emphasis on identity politics, suggesting this approach contributed to Vice President Kamala Harris’s defeat by Donald Trump, declaring that “woke is broke.”

The show’s hosts, particularly moved by Maureen Dowd’s New York Times column “Democrats and the Case of Mistaken Identity Politics,” dedicated airtime to read the entire piece.

“We got a lot of calls about this piece, and it’s an interesting message for Democrats,” Brzezinski said, according to the Daily Mail. “‘It really crystallized how some Democrats are waking up and realizing that woke is broke.”

Dowd’s analysis highlighted Trump’s ability to connect with voters who felt constrained by evolving social norms.

“Donald Trump played to the irritation of many Americans disgusted at being regarded as insensitive for talking the way they’d always talked,” she wrote.

The discussion expanded to address Dowd’s observation about the ideological gap between white progressives and minority communities they claim to represent.

The article cited data showing significant disparities between white progressive views and those of minority communities. According to an October Financial Times report, while 75% of white progressives saw systemic racism in society, only 62% of Black Americans and 38% of Hispanics shared this view. Immigration policies also revealed stark differences, with nearly half of Black and Hispanic Americans supporting stricter border measures compared to just 15% of white progressives.

“This is what we’ve known since 2017, what you and I have talked about, that white elitists that run the Democratic Party are far to the left of many Black and Hispanic voters in the Democratic Party,” Scarborough said, talking to the Rev. Al Sharpton. “I remember a pollster for Barack Obama … came out and had that poll in 2017. He got absolutely hammered on Twitter, absolutely hammered by the far left. How dare you say this! How dare you. But he was right.

“It was true in ’17, and it was doubly true in 2024 that these white progressives on the far, far left said, We’re going to save you, Black and Hispanic people of America.’

“A lot of Black and Hispanic people of America said, No thanks. You’re kind of wild. You’re too far left. We believe in the American dream. We want to be part of the American dream. Thanks, but no thanks. Keep that in your college classes.”
