The Munich community was struck by tragedy when a mother and her 2-year-old daughter succumbed to injuries sustained during Thursday’s car attack at a labor union gathering. Police confirmed their deaths on Saturday, adding to the somber aftermath of the incident.

The attack, which left 39 people injured, was allegedly carried out by a 24-year-old Afghan asylum seeker. Prosecutors indicated that religious extremism appears to have motivated the assault, though investigations have found no connections to organized radical groups.

Prior to the confirmation of these deaths, authorities had reported that two victims were in critical condition following the incident. The deceased mother, identified as a 37-year-old Munich resident, and her young daughter were among those most severely impacted by the attack.

This incident marks the fifth in a succession of immigrant-related attacks that have occurred within the past nine months. The timing of these events has thrust immigration policy into the spotlight as Germany approaches its February 23 electoral deadline.

In response to the tragedy, Chancellor Olaf Scholz made a solemn visit to the attack site on Saturday. He paid his respects by placing a white rose at a makeshift memorial erected to honor the victims.
