Rand Paul Uses Heimlich Maneuver To Save Choking Colleague

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) reportedly saved one of his colleagues from choking on her food during a Senate luncheon on Thursday using the Heimlich maneuver.

Paul saved Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA) during the luncheon for Senate Republicans shortly before 11 a.m., which Ernst was scheduled to host. According to CNN, host duties for this event rotate every week and include offering food from the host’s state. This week, Ernst provided her colleagues with giant pork chops and ribeye steaks from the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association.

As she began choking, Paul reportedly noticed and rushed over to Ernst — successfully dislodging the food from her esophagus using the simple, yet crucial Heimlich maneuver.
Both Paul and Ernst addressed the event attendees after the scare, giving them an explanation about how to detect when someone is choking. They also informed them that training for the Heimlich maneuver is available at the Capitol.

Ernst confirmed the details of the choking incident in a lighthearted post on X, formerly known as Twitter, from her official government account — writing, “Can’t help but choke on the woke policies Dems are forcing down our throats. Thanks, Dr. @RandPaul!”

Several of Paul’s colleagues in Congress, along with his wife, praised him on social media for his heroic actions.

“Senator Rand Paul, MD is a hero! Glad Senator Ernst is ok!” Kelly Paul, the senator’s wife, wrote in a post on X, pointing out that her husband is a doctor. The senator is an ophthalmologist and doctor and one of just four physicians in the Senate, which includes Sens. John Barrasso (R-WY), Bill Cassidy (R-LA), and Roger Marshall (R-KS).

“Rand Paul = HERO Not all heroes wear capes. Not all senators can quote Mises and Hayek — while saving lives!” wrote Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) from his personal X account.

According to a tweet from Washington Post reporter Liz Goodwin, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) also praised Paul’s actions.

Goodwin claimed that Paul was “getting unusual praise from his colleagues,” and quoted Graham as saying “God bless Rand Paul, I never thought I’d say that.”
