January 6, 2021 protests at the U.S. Capitol. This move underscores the party’s commitment to uncovering the full truth about what transpired on that fateful day.

Representative Barry Loudermilk of Georgia has been tapped to chair this subcommittee, which will operate under the auspices of the House Judiciary Committee, led by Representative Jim Jordan of Ohio. In a statement released on Wednesday, House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Republican from Louisiana, emphasized the importance of this endeavor.

“House Republicans are proud of our work so far in exposing the false narratives peddled by the politically motivated January 6 Select Committee during the 117th Congress, but there is still more work to be done,” Johnson said. “We are establishing this Select Subcommittee to continue our efforts to uncover the full truth that is owed to the American people. The composition and other details regarding the Select Subcommittee will be announced soon.”

Jordan, expressing confidence in Loudermilk’s leadership, stated, “He has been a leader in getting to the bottom of what the Democrat-led January 6 Committee failed to uncover, and we look forward to helping him bring all the facts to the American people.”

Loudermilk, acknowledging the gravity of the task ahead, said, “What happened at the Capitol that day was the result of a series of intelligence, security, and leadership failures at multiple levels within numerous entities.” He expressed gratitude to Speaker Johnson and Chairman Jordan, adding, “I am looking forward to working with Chairman Jim Jordan to continue to uncover all the facts and begin the arduous task of making needed reforms to ensure this level of security failure may never happen again.”

The announcement of this new subcommittee comes just two days after President Donald Trump pardoned roughly 1,500 defendants in cases related to the January 6 incidents.

It’s worth noting that Loudermilk previously chaired an oversight subcommittee in the last Congress that called for a criminal investigation against former Representative Liz Cheney, a Republican from Wyoming, in connection with the Democrat-led subcommittee investigating the Capitol attacks. The subcommittee issued a 128-page report accusing Cheney of allegedly colluding with Cassidy Hutchinson, a former White House aide who was a key witness for the committee, and of using the subcommittee to attack then-former President Donald Trump. In one of his final acts, former President Joe Biden issued a preemptive pardon for Cheney and other members of the first January 6 select subcommittee.
