Queens state Assemblyman Ron Kim has come forward with allegations that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) attempted to interfere in his election during last June’s Democratic primary.
Kim, who has long represented New York’s 40th District, said his opponent, Yi Andy Chen, received support from organizations tied to the CCP.
In an interview with The New York Post, Kim described how CCP-linked groups, including the American Chinese Commerce Association, tried to influence the election. Kim’s comments come shortly after the arrest of Linda Sun, a former aide to New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, who is accused of being an unregistered CCP agent.
Sun and her husband allegedly laundered millions of dollars in kickbacks tied to the CCP to buy luxury properties and vehicles. Kim warned that the CCP’s growing influence in New York’s politics is a dangerous trend, especially in districts with large Chinese populations like Flushing.
Despite facing significant challenges, Kim successfully defended his seat in the primary. However, he remains concerned about the rising influence of CCP-linked organizations in the U.S., saying that while most of the Chinese community opposes the CCP, a new wave of organizations loyal to Beijing is trying to interfere in American elections.
