Russia’s losses in Ukraine reached unprecedented levels in 2024, with approximately 150,000 troops killed in combat operations, according to Ukrainian military leadership.
General Oleksandr Syrskyi, commander-in-chief of Ukraine’s armed forces, revealed during a state television broadcast that Russian casualties in 2024 surpassed previous years, with total losses reaching 434,000. “Approximately 150,000 were killed in 2024,” he stated, noting that these losses exceeded the combined fatalities of the previous two years of conflict.
Ukrainian military records indicate that Russian losses have been mounting significantly since the war began, with current figures showing 818,000 personnel, 9,800 tanks, and over 20,000 armored personnel carriers destroyed by Ukrainian forces as of early 2024.

The autumn months of 2024 saw Russian casualties escalate dramatically, with daily losses reportedly doubling compared to the first year of the conflict. By December, these numbers allegedly increased to 2,000 casualties per day, attributed to Moscow’s strategy of overwhelming Ukrainian positions through mass infantry attacks.
Supporting these claims, the British Ministry of Defence reported that Russian casualties had seen consecutive monthly increases through the latter half of 2024, with December marking the highest monthly toll of the entire conflict at over 48,000 casualties.
While casualty figures in the Ukraine conflict remain difficult to verify independently, and both sides have strategic reasons to manipulate these numbers for morale purposes, Western analysts have primarily focused on Russian losses. Ukrainian casualties remain largely undisclosed, though President Zelensky has previously dismissed Russian estimates of Ukrainian losses as “deceitful” propaganda that exaggerated actual numbers tenfold.

Further highlighting Russian military challenges, General Syrskyi reported that Ukrainian strikes on Russian ammunition depots have successfully disrupted enemy operations. He pointed to a significant reduction in Russian artillery activity as evidence of these impacts.
“For several months now, the artillery ammunition expenditure rates in the Russian army have practically halved. If previously the figure reached up to 40,000 rounds per day, it is now significantly lower,” the General reported.
