Sanders Blasts Nikki Haley’s Call For Competency Tests, ‘Absurd’

Sen. Bernard Sanders (D-VT) criticized GOP presidential candidate Nikki Haley for proposing a mandatory competency test for any elected official over 75 years of age.

The former South Carolina Gov. and United Nations ambassador declared that she was running for president in 2024. She is the only major declared GOP candidate so far, aside from former President Donald Trump, who is seeking a second term in office.

As she made her presidential announcement in Charleston, she proposed mental competency tests for politicians over 75 years old.

“In the America I see; the permanent politician will finally retire. We’ll have term limits for Congress and mandatory mental competency tests for politicians over 75 years old,” Haley said.

On CBS’ “Face the Nation” Sanders said that Haley’s idea was absurd and discriminatory against elderly Americans.

“We are fighting racism, we’re fighting sexism, we’re fighting homophobia. I think we should also be fighting ageism. Trust people, look at people and say, you know, this person is competent, this person is not competent,” he said.

“Look at what they do, what they believe in. What are they fighting for? What does Donald Trump stand for? Do you believe in that? Well, I certainly don’t. What does Joe Biden stand for? What is he doing? Has he accomplished- look at- look at him in that way, not on age,” he continued.

Sanders said that voters have to judge competency in their elected officials as they see fit.

“I don’t think you make a blanket statement,” he said.

Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-HI) also blasted Haley’s proposal.

“I think she should test her own mental capacity. Come on, how many times has she said she’s fighting Trump and then the next thing you know, she’s kissing his ring?” Hirono said.

President Joe Biden has not received a mental competency test as president.

Recently, White House physician Kevin O’Connor said, “President Biden remains a healthy, vigorous, 80-year-old male, who is fit to successfully execute the duties of the presidency.”

Trump, 76, would be required to take a mental competency test if Haley gets her way. As would Sanders, 81, and President Joe Biden, 80.
