Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) has demanded that Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle testify publicly before the Senate Homeland Security Committee following the attempted assassination of President Donald Trump. Appearing on Fox News’ “Your World,” Hawley criticized Cheatle’s performance during a private briefing, calling it poorly prepared.
Hawley expressed frustration with the Secret Service and FBI’s handling of the situation, noting that their briefings limited questions and provided few answers. “The director herself did not actually brief much,” Hawley said. “When she did try to answer a question or two, it did not go well. She was not well-prepared.”
The senator called for public hearings to investigate the incident thoroughly. He pointed out a 62-minute delay between identifying the shooter as a threat and the commencement of the attack on Trump. “We need to find out what happened during those 62 minutes,” he emphasized.
Host Neil Cavuto acknowledged that Cheatle plans to remain in her position unless removed by President Biden or Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. Hawley criticized the administration for a lack of accountability, comparing it to the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan. “Nobody in this administration takes responsibility for anything,” he said.
Hawley highlighted the consequences of the security lapse, noting the death of a bystander and injuries to others. “These people ought to be gone. The director ought to be gone. The whole top echelon ought to be gone,” he asserted. “We will get to the bottom of this and find out how this was allowed to happen.”
