Taylor Swift’s recent public endorsement of Kamala Harris has not had the desired effect, according to a new YouGov poll. Following a presidential debate, Swift shared her support for Harris and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) on Instagram, commending their leadership and dedication to progressive causes.
The poll reveals that Swift’s endorsement might be turning voters away from Harris. Only 8% of respondents said they are more likely to vote for Harris because of Swift’s support. In contrast, 20% reported that they are less likely to support Harris due to the endorsement. A large majority, 66%, indicated that Swift’s announcement has not influenced their voting choices.
Opinions on celebrity political endorsements vary. The poll found that 41% of participants believe Swift should avoid discussing politics publicly, while 38% support her right to make endorsements. Additionally, 66% of those surveyed do not consider themselves fans of Swift, with 28% identifying as fans and 6% as “big fans,” primarily women and registered Democrats.
Swift’s endorsement led to a spike in interest in voting, with 337,826 visitors accessing vote.gov through a link she shared. Nonetheless, the impact of Swift’s endorsement on Harris’s campaign seems limited.
The poll also showed that 46% of voters thought Harris won the recent debate, compared to 19% for former President Donald Trump. However, only 6% said the debate changed their voting plans. The results suggest that celebrity endorsements, despite generating attention, may not significantly alter voter preferences.
