In a recent operation highlighting the ongoing border security challenges, Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) apprehended a human smuggler transporting ten undocumented immigrants during a pursuit in La Salle County along IH-35.

The perpetrator, identified as Kevin Cruz Diaz, an undocumented immigrant from El Salvador, attempted to evade law enforcement in a Ford F-150 before being stopped when authorities deployed tire deflation devices. The group of immigrants, originating from Mexico, Honduras, and Guatemala, was subsequently transferred to Border Patrol custody.

This incident follows recent DPS surveillance operations, including drone monitoring of individuals crossing the Rio Grande by raft. Such enforcement actions are part of Operation Lone Star, initiated by Governor Greg Abbott in 2021, which has proven effective in combating illegal border crossings and drug trafficking, particularly fentanyl.

Under Article IV, Section 4 of the Constitution, which states: “The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government, and shall protect each of them against Invasion; and on Application of the Legislature, or of the Executive (when the Legislature cannot be convened) against domestic Violence,” the federal government bears responsibility for protecting against invasion.

Since the beginning of 2021, approximately 15 million undocumented immigrants have entered the United States, though precise figures remain unclear due to undetected crossings. Donald Trump has pledged to address border security immediately upon taking office if elected president.

The Texas DPS and National Guard continue their efforts to address border security concerns that have escalated during the current administration’s tenure.
