A thief who stole a baby Jesus statue from a Colorado nativity display had a change of heart, returning the figurine to a local fire station accompanied by a remorseful note.

The incident began on December 17 when the statue disappeared from the Fort Collins Old Town Square nativity scene. Fort Collins Police Services quickly took action, sharing a photograph of the suspected thief and requesting public assistance in identifying the individual.

“This Grinch tried to ruin Christmas by stealing the Baby Jesus from the Old Town Square nativity scene,” the police department posted.

Just two days later, the stolen statue made its way back to the community. Fort Collins Police Services informed the public of the development, stating, “The Baby Jesus figurine reported stolen from the Old Town Square Nativity scene four days ago was today anonymously dropped off at Poudre Fire Authority Station #1 in Fort Collins, along with an apology note (12/19). No further information has been obtained about the person who swiped the statuette.”

Along with the returned statue, the repentant thief left a contrite message: “I am really sorry, I made a dumb mistake in the moment, it won’t happen again.”

Upon inspection of the returned statue, some damage was noted. According to Fox 9’s coverage, several fingers appeared to be broken off the figurine, though it remains unclear whether this damage existed before the theft occurred.

As of now, authorities have not released the identity of any suspects in connection with the incident.
