Trump And DeSantis Battle In Same-Day Iowa Campaign Events

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) and former President Donald Trump will go head to head in battling campaign events on the same day, and at the same time, in Iowa. DeSantis and Trump’s increased presence in Iowa comes six weeks before the Iowa caucuses take place on Jan. 15.

On Saturday, DeSantis will complete his campaigning strategy to visit all 99 of Iowa’s counties. He will hold an event and give a speech in Newton, Iowa, on Saturday afternoon. At the same time, Trump will hold his own event in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Political analysts now consider DeSantis to be a longshot to become the 2024 Republican presidential nominee. Most national polls show that Trump remains largely dominant, which has led many to believe he will likely win the Republican nomination.

In many ways, DeSantis has been stuck in Trump’s shadow. According to analysts, DeSantis has struggled to connect with voters. He has also struggled to convince voters who like him to vote for him, rather than Trump, as both men seem to hold much of the same base.

However, despite his shortcomings in the polls, DeSantis claims to be positive about his situation and believes he will win in Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds’ (R) endorsement may help him sway some voters. DeSantis also gained the endorsement of Bob Vander Plaats, an evangelical leader.

Reynolds also expects to see DeSantis win on Jan. 15. “He’s a staunch conservative and brings that to the table without the drama,” she said, according to The Associated Press. “Iowans tend to break late. We’re seeing it. I think he’s really starting to hit his stride.”

Some analysts believe DeSantis may also face opposition from former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley. Haley has gained in the polls in the past few months. She’s also earned a lucrative endorsement from the Americans For Prosperity, a Koch network.

However, Trump remains DeSantis’ biggest obstacle to winning the Iowa caucuses. When asked about DeSantis also campaigning in Iowa, Trump’s campaign compared him to another GOP candidate, Ryan Binkley, who has also visited Iowa’s 99 counties.

In a statement, Trump’s campaign said, “If Ron DeSantis can’t even keep up with Ryan Binkley in Iowa, how can he expect to be competitive with Nikki ‘Birdbrain’ Haley for distant second place?”
