amicable interaction unfolded between President-elect Donald Trump and former President Barack Obama as they engaged in a cordial exchange while seated alongside each other during the funeral service for former President Jimmy Carter on Thursday. Trump and his wife Melania occupied seats at the end of the second row, while to their right sat Obama, former President George Bush and first lady Laura Bush, as well as Hillary and Bill Clinton, with Michelle Obama’s absence being notable.

President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and their respective spouses were seated in the front row, marking the first occasion since the 2018 funeral of former President George H.W. Bush that Biden and the four former presidents had convened.

According to reports from NBC News, Trump and Obama were witnessed engaging in friendly conversation, while the Bushes walked past without acknowledging either of them and proceeded to take their seats. Subsequently, the Bushes turned around and greeted former Vice Presidents Mike Pence, Al Gore, and Dan Quayle.

As Trump and Melania settled into their seats – with others in the first two rows yet to arrive – the president-elect shook hands with Gore and Pence. However, Pence’s wife, Karen, appeared to disregard both Trumps.

The funeral service took place at the National Cathedral, an Episcopal church in the nation’s capital, which has also hosted state funerals for former presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower, Ronald Reagan, Gerald Ford, and George H.W. Bush.

Following the cathedral service, Carter’s remains will be transported aboard Special Air Mission 39 back to Georgia for a private funeral service at the Baptist church in Plains, where Carter taught Sunday school. A final motorcade through his hometown will then convey Carter’s body to a burial plot at his residence.

“It was real,” Trump said. “It was admirable to me because they were willing to do the things that had to be done to make America great again.”

Trump had previously paid his respects to Carter as the 39th president lay in state at the Capitol Rotunda on Wednesday, ahead of his funeral.
