In a significant move, President Donald Trump is set to sign an executive order today that will dismantle the Department of Education, delivering on a key campaign pledge he made to voters.

A White House document obtained by Reuters outlines the dissolution of the department, which Trump has previously dismissed as “a big con job.”

The administration’s new Education Secretary, Linda McMahon, has expressed support for the president’s decision to eliminate the department, marking Trump’s first closure of a cabinet-level agency.

The dismantling process has already begun, as reported by Breitbart News, with significant reductions in personnel and substantial budget cuts affecting various divisions. The Office for Civil Rights and the Institute of Education Sciences, which monitors national academic performance, have experienced major cutbacks, prompting criticism from Democratic lawmakers.

Reuters reveals that the executive order instructs McMahon to “take all necessary steps to facilitate the closure of the Department of Education and return education authority to the States, while continuing to ensure the effective and uninterrupted delivery of services, programs, and benefits on which Americans rely.”

According to NPR, this closure has been anticipated since early February, when the administration initially disclosed its plans but delayed action pending McMahon’s confirmation by the Senate.

The announcement follows recent widespread staff reductions at the Education Department, which have already been implemented by the Trump administration.

The closure aligns with Trump’s 2024 campaign platform, where he pledged to eliminate the department and transfer control to individual states, citing inefficiency, misaligned priorities, and wasteful spending of taxpayer money without adequate results.
