On Thursday, KT McFarland, the former deputy national security adviser, expressed her view to Newsmax that President Donald Trump comprehends the significance of implementing reciprocal tariffs, a practice that has been available but never fully utilized. McFarland’s comments came in the wake of Trump’s announcement of a new executive order that imposes taxes on foreign goods at the same rate that other nations apply to American products. “If you build your product in the United States, there are no tariffs,” Trump told reporters.

McFarland emphasized the importance of Trump’s use of the term “reciprocal,” stating, “If they want to charge us 25%, great. We’ll charge 25%. If they want to go to zero, we’ll go to zero. But it should be fair across the board. And that’s the big difference. And President Trump with all these tariff wars, he understands the one thing that is we’ve always had the ability, but nobody’s ever taken advantage of it.”

She further added, “Other countries need to sell their stuff to us a whole lot more than we need to buy it from them, and that gives us all the leverage.”
