Trump wants shutdown during Biden’s term, not his

President Trump issued an early morning statement today, urging Republicans to address the potential government shutdown before his inauguration on January 20, placing responsibility squarely on the Biden administration.

“If there is going to be a shutdown of government, let it begin now, under the Biden Administration, not after January 20th, under ‘TRUMP,'” Trump said. “This is a Biden problem to solve, but if Republicans can help solve it, they will!”

The House of Representatives is set to meet at 10 AM to consider a spending measure that aligns with President-elect Trump’s priorities. This follows yesterday’s unsuccessful vote on a continuing resolution (CR) intended to maintain government funding, which Republicans opposed due to concerns over spending levels and debt ceiling increases.

In an effort to gain support for the plan, Trump reached out to Republican lawmakers through Truth Social on Thursday evening, promising future spending reductions. He declared, “The United States will cut Hundreds of Billions of Dollars in spending next year through Reconciliation!”

The vote came after widespread rejection of an earlier 1,547-page continuing resolution by Trump supporters, with House Speaker Mike Johnson facing criticism for his handling of the funding negotiations. Despite Trump’s endorsement of the bill as “VITAL to the America First Agenda” and his call for unanimous Congressional support, 38 Republicans voted against it.

Democratic opposition was nearly unanimous, with only two members breaking ranks. They defended their position by claiming that “President Musk” had forced them to abandon the previous CR and argued that the current proposal was designed to trigger a government shutdown. The bill would have sustained funding for essential services, including disaster relief, military operations, and agricultural support.

Vice President-elect JD Vance criticized House Democrats following the failed vote, suggesting they “would rather shut down the government and fight for global censorship bullsh*t,” referencing the previous CR’s inclusion of the controversial Global Engagement Center censorship program.

The Trump Transition Team released a statement addressing the situation:

“Nearly every single House Democrat just voted against government funding and to shut down the government.

These 197 Democrats voted against keeping the government open, disaster relief, and aid for farmers.

As Vice President-elect JD Vance said, Democrats ‘asked for a shutdown and I think that’s exactly what they’re going to get.'”
