John Oliver sparked controversy by making provocative remarks about former President Ronald Reagan during a recent segment on “Last Week Tonight,” where he addressed the removal of Rep. Al Green from the House chamber.

Oliver’s criticism was primarily directed at centrist Democrats’ response to Green’s ejection after his vocal protest during President Trump’s Congressional address. The HBO host highlighted what he perceived as a double standard in handling such disruptions.

The comedian’s sharpest criticism emerged in response to Michigan Senator Elissa Slotkin’s comments comparing Trump and Reagan. Slotkin had stated, “Reagan must be rolling in his grave. We all want an end to the war in Ukraine, but Reagan understood that true strength required America to combine our military and economic might with moral clarity. As a Cold War kid, I’m thankful it was Reagan and not Trump in office in the 1980s. Trump would have lost us the Cold War.”

Oliver responded by saying, “He was our only president to make a movie with a chimp,” or “He’s dead,” while questioning Reagan’s supposed moral clarity, particularly regarding his administration’s handling of LGBTQ+ issues during the 1980s.

The controversy surrounding Rep. Green continues, with House members formally censuring him. A CNN poll indicated that 80% of respondents disapproved of his recent House floor behavior, though he remains committed to pursuing Trump’s impeachment.

Meanwhile, Oliver’s show has experienced declining viewership, currently attracting just over 300,000 viewers from MAX’s subscriber base of more than 70 million, ranking third behind “Real Time with Bill Maher” and “White Lotus.”
