A significant diplomatic breakthrough is unfolding as the United States and Russia engage in direct peace negotiations regarding Ukraine and other global matters, leaving European powers noticeably absent from these crucial discussions.

In a recent development, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio conducted talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, emphasizing President Donald Trump’s dedication to resolving the Ukrainian conflict.

The conversation extended beyond Ukraine, encompassing various areas of potential bilateral cooperation, as confirmed by the State Department.

Daily Wrap reported:
“‘The Secretary re-affirmed President Trump’s commitment to finding an end to the conflict in Ukraine. In addition, they discussed the opportunity to potentially work together on a number of other bilateral issues’, the American diplomatic department said in a brief three-sentence statement after Saturday’s conversation between the U.S. and Russian foreign ministers.”

The Russian side expressed similar optimism, with their Foreign Ministry indicating potential improvements in Washington-Moscow relations.

“‘Lavrov and Rubio confirmed their readiness to work together to restore mutually respectful interstate dialogue in accordance with the tone set by the presidents (…). They agreed on regular contacts, including those for preparations for a Russian-American summit meeting’, reads a statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry.

The Russian diplomatic department also conveyed that the politicians advocated for maintaining communication channels to ‘resolve the problems that have accumulated in U.S.-Russian relations’. The statement also mentioned a ‘mutual commitment’ to cooperate on international matters, including the context of the war in Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East.”

An upcoming meeting in Saudi Arabia will include Rubio, alongside Special Envoy for the Middle East Steven Witkoff and National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, who will represent American interests in discussions with the Russian delegation.

Reuters reported:
“Lavrov and Rubio, in a call initiated by the U.S., agreed to maintain contacts to resolve problems in bilateral relations, ‘in the interests of removing the unilateral barriers to mutually beneficial trade, economic and investment cooperation inherited from the previous administration’, Russia’s foreign ministry said in a statement.”

While specific details about these “barriers” remain unclear, they likely relate to sanctions implemented during Biden’s administration.

“The U.S. State Department said Rubio reaffirmed in the call Trump’s commitment to finding an end to the conflict in Ukraine. ‘In addition, they discussed the opportunity to potentially work together on a number of other bilateral issues’, it said in a statement, without providing further detail.

They agreed to work on restoring ‘mutually respectful interstate dialogue’ in line with the tone set by the presidents, the ministry said.”
