The New York Police Department’s Academy in Queens fell victim to vandalism early Saturday morning, with perpetrators leaving behind a trail of destruction and a desecrated American flag on the ground. Despite the facility’s round-the-clock security and surveillance measures, the culprits managed to evade detection and carry out their act of vandalism.

According to The New York Post, the vandals left their mark by splattering paint on various surfaces, including sidewalks, walls of the $950 million training facility on College Point Boulevard, and the poles at the entrance. A rope line was discovered hanging from the building’s facade, suggesting that someone may have rappelled down from above.

The incident occurred against the backdrop of NYC Mayor Eric Adams’ recent declaration that “the city’s not surviving, it’s thriving.” The vandalism at the NYPD Police Academy, which included property painted red and a desecrated flag, stands in stark contrast to this assertion. Notably, the security cameras were reportedly inoperable due to ongoing upgrades, although an Argus camera may have been in the vicinity.

A police source, speaking to The Post, expressed their frustration with the security breach, stating, “Everyone who has that security detail should be transferred immediately. They have one job. One job. What an embarrassment. There’s nothing else around that place.”

Interestingly, the damaged flag found at the scene was not torn down from the building but was brought to the academy and left there by the vandals. NYPD spokesman Edwin Sanchez informed the newspaper that efforts to obtain video footage of the area were ongoing, and a description of the suspect or suspects was not yet available.

The report further revealed that police sources were experiencing difficulties accessing the facility’s cameras due to recent technological upgrades. As a result, they were attempting to retrieve video from nearby cameras.

A retired detective emphasized the gravity of the situation, telling the paper, “That’s something that should never happen. That building has many things in it that should be guarded 24/7.”

The incident has raised concerns about the security measures in place at the NYPD Academy and the potential vulnerabilities of such a crucial facility.
