Woman Shot By Stepson At New Mexico Graduation Ceremony

Victoria Bencomo is facing a challenging recovery after being shot in the neck by her stepson Christian Bencomo during his graduation ceremony at the Albuquerque Convention Center on May 8th, 2024. The incident occurred as Victoria attempted to hug Christian after he received his diploma.

Angel Chester, Victoria’s sister, described the traumatic event on a GoFundMe page set up to support Victoria’s recovery. “After he shot her and she fell to the ground, he started stomping on her head,” Chester stated.

The shooting left attendees in shock with many initially mistaking the gunshot for a firecracker or balloon. Over 100 people were present at the Southwest Secondary Learning Center graduation ceremony when the incident took place.

Christian Bencomo, 21, has been charged with multiple offenses including aggravated assault with intent to commit a felony. He is being held without bail at the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center.

Victoria Bencomo faces a long road to recovery with extensive medical treatment and rehabilitation ahead. As the sole provider for her children working three jobs, the financial burden is expected to be substantial.
