In a remarkable turnaround, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has publicly acknowledged significant issues with the company’s fact-checking system, declaring that third-party fact-checkers on Meta platforms have undermined trust through political bias rather than enhancing it.

During his announcement, Zuckerberg addressed the mounting pressure from traditional media outlets that led to increased censorship on Meta’s platforms. “The legacy media pushed to censor more and more,” Zuckerberg stated. He noted that these censorship efforts intensified following Donald Trump’s victory in the 2016 presidential election, driven by mainstream media’s persistent warnings about misinformation threatening democracy.

The Meta chief executive revealed plans to dismantle the current fact-checking system in favor of a community-driven approach similar to that used on X, Elon Musk’s platform. This transformation will initially launch in the United States.

To restore free speech on Meta platforms, Zuckerberg outlined several key changes, including policy simplification and the strategic relocation of “trust and safety” operations from California to Texas. This geographical shift, he suggested, could help address concerns about content moderation bias.

The CEO also expressed his commitment to enabling more open discussions about sensitive topics like gender and immigration, which had previously faced strict censorship on Facebook. Additionally, Zuckerberg announced an unexpected partnership with former President Trump to resist global governmental pressure for censorship of American companies.

This dramatic policy reversal represents a complete departure from the previously endorsed media moderation system. Zuckerberg candidly admitted to the damage caused by these practices, acknowledging their negative impact on free expression and the unjust removal of user content and accounts.

In his statement, Zuckerberg emphasized the importance of returning to Meta’s fundamental principle of empowering user voices, explicitly acknowledging how the previous system had suppressed free expression and harmed users unfairly.

The announcement symbolizes a broader cultural shift, with the traditional media’s influence appearing to diminish. Zuckerberg’s frank acknowledgment suggests a new era where established media’s control over content moderation is increasingly challenged.
